Livin' it up on Kantstraße? Not so fast, buddy!

Berlin, here we go again — the traffic department is shaking things up on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg. Guess who's kicking the controversial bike lane to the curb? You guessed it! That pesky bike lane will soon be a thing of the past.

In its place, a shimmering shared lane for buses and cyclists will now grace the streets, according to the traffic administration of Senator for Transport, Ute Bonde (CDU). Not to worry, though, the local district council in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf has already been filled in on this Traffic Order revision.

There's been a ruckus about the roadway division since the pandemic. That so-called pop-up bike lane popped up in 2020, cheekily sandwiched between the sidewalk and a parking lane. Some poor sods have argued that this banana split of road architecture has caused a headache for fire-fighting trucks. The bike lane just doesn't leave enough wiggle room for emergency vehicles to squeeze by, and those lofty ladder trucks can't stretch their arms to reach upper floors of some apartment buildings from the moving traffic lane, allegedly.

To spare the fire department's blushes, parking spaces will now appear along the edge of the roadway, followed by a jolly bus lane with cyclist approval, and finally, a lane for the rest of us common folks. Petra Nelken, the spokesperson for the traffic administration, assures us that this is a sensible solution, one that can be implemented swiftly and is dang effective! The district has a fortnight to voice their protest and tender anycomments.

The district folks are expected to jump onboard and implement the order, ASAP, so we can finally say "so long" to this Camelot-like traffic situation. The once-proposed solution to reinforce the center median of Kantstraße for fire truck use during emergencies is deemed unrealistic, the traffic administration declares. Bummer for them!

Image the shift in Charlottenburg's traffic scape due to construction on the A100 after the S-Bahn bridge demolition. The bridge is set to be replaced by a glorious new one. The traffic department insists that Kantstraße needs to be a beautiful runway for emergency vehicles, Pedlow rescuers, and public transport, for all our sakes.
