A66's Salzbachtal bridge now allows free passage for vehicles - A66 Saltwater Bridge Now Accessible for Vehicular Traffic
After nearly three years of disruption, the Salzbachtal Bridge on the A66 in Wiesbaden has been fully reopened to traffic. The bridge, which connects the Rheingau with Frankfurt, was demolished in November 2019 due to structural damage caused by a fire and has now been replaced with a new structure, consisting of two sections: the South Bridge and the recently opened North Bridge.
The old bridge, approximately 300 meters long, was closed for safety reasons after concrete chunks fell off in 2021. Since then, traffic has been flowing over the South Bridge, but with only two narrowed lanes in each direction, causing regular congestion during rush hour.
The opening of the North Bridge marks the end of this long period of traffic congestion on the A66. Wiesbaden's Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende (SPD) commented that the bottleneck is finally gone, and the North Bridge has now been opened, eliminating the bottleneck on the A66.
The reconstruction process involved rebuilding the damaged sections to restore full capacity and ensure safety for motorists. The new structure is expected to alleviate the worst of the problems on the A66, providing much-needed relief for commuters and businesses in the area.
The Salzbachtal Bridge on the A66 was fully opened to traffic on Friday evening, four years after its demolition, bringing much-needed relief to the city of Wiesbaden and the surrounding region.
The Salzbachtal Bridge reconstruction, influenced by the community policy, was a collaborative effort involving various sectors such as the industry, finance, and transportation. The newly opened North Bridge, a testament to an employment policy focused on safety and capacity restoration, will alleviate congestion and improve employment conditions for businesses in the region.
