Accountant Labels Indian Corruption 'Gangsters in Suits', Triggers CBI Probe
Dinesh Wadera, a chartered accountant, has sparked a storm with his scathing remarks on corruption in India. He labelled corrupt officials as 'gangsters in suits', revealing a system where bribery is institutionalised and targets-driven.
Wadera's comments were triggered by Wintrack, a logistics firm, halting its operations due to alleged harassment from Chennai Customs officials. He noted that corruption is not confined to the customs department, permeating various government branches, from small contracts to billion-dollar projects.
He revealed that corruption in India runs on targets, with each department having a 'collection goal' for bribes. This money flows upward, from the lowest clerk to the highest office. Wadera believes it is the common man and honest entrepreneurs who bear the brunt of this corruption.
Following Wadera's announcement, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched an investigation into the bribery allegations against the Chennai Customs Authority.
Wadera, a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), labelled corruption as the 'biggest business in India'. He concluded that until the cycle of corruption is broken, India will remain a nation where the most profitable 'time in india' business is corruption itself.
