New Vice Admiral Takes Charge of Western Naval Command

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has assumed command of the Western Naval Command, one of the Indian Navy’s top operational commands, based in Mumbai. Upon taking charge, he paid homage to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the Nation at the Gaurav Stambh, Naval Dockyard, Mumbai.

The new Vice Admiral, who was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. He has had a distinguished career, commanding five frontline warships, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, India's largest aircraft carrier. Notably, he was the second commanding officer of INS Vikramaditya.

Throughout his career, Vice Admiral Swaminathan has held key leadership roles such as Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, Chief of Staff Western Naval Command, Flag Officer Sea Training, and Flag Officer Defence Advisory Group. He is credited with establishing the Indian Naval Safety Team and significantly enhancing operational sea training in the Navy.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan’s education includes a BSc degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and an MA in Defence Studies from King's College, London. He also holds an MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi. His advanced military education includes stints at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, the Joint Services Command and Staff College (UK), the College of Naval Warfare (India), and the US Naval War College.

Before taking command of the Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral Swaminathan discharged the responsibilities of Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command in Mumbai and Controller of Personnel Services and Chief of Personnel at the Naval Headquarters, New Delhi. He also played a key role in the conduct of training across the Indian Navy.

In his new role, Vice Admiral Swaminathan will be in charge of India’s premier naval command responsible for operations in the Arabian Sea and beyond, underscoring his critical role in maritime security and strategic naval dominance. He succeeds Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, who retired after four decades of service in the Indian Navy.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan has received prestigious awards including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) recognising his distinguished service. He has also headed the Work-Up Organisation of the Navy as the Flag Officer Sea Training and served as the Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, Kochi.

With his extensive experience and leadership, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is poised to lead the Western Naval Command with distinction, ensuring the safety and security of India’s maritime borders.
