Aeon Opens New Mall in Wuhan, China as Consumers Return to In-Person Shopping
Aeon, the Japanese retail giant, is expanding its presence in China. The company recently opened a new mall in Wuhan, its first in the country since 2021. This move comes as Chinese consumers return to in-person shopping after the end of zero-COVID lockdowns.
The Aeon Mall Wuhan Jiangxia is one of the group's largest in Asia, spanning 288,000 square meters. It offers a diverse range of shopping options, with about 260 stores including Japanese chains and local businesses. The entertainment area features a go-kart track, archery, virtual reality sports, and an indoor petting zoo, providing a unique shopping experience.
Aeon's latest mall opening in China took place in Kunshan in 2023. The company aims to open 51 malls overseas by February 2026, with 28 planned for China. This expansion strategy is a response to the growing preference for in-person shopping, with e-commerce accounting for 27% of China's retail sales in 2021, up from 11% in 2015. Aeon is also focusing more on its digital strategy to compete with rivals like Dalian Wanda Group.
Aeon's recent openings in Wuhan and Kunshan demonstrate the company's commitment to the Chinese market. With a focus on both physical and digital retail experiences, Aeon is well-positioned to cater to the evolving preferences of Chinese consumers.
