Title: Western Australia and Japan Strengthen Ties in Hydrogen Economy with MoU between Pilbara Ports and Himeji

January 30, 2023

In a significant move towards a greener future, the Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) and the Port of Himeji, Japan, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on decarbonization efforts and promote hydrogen exports. This strategic partnership was announced during Premier Mark McGowan's trade mission in Japan, as part of the WA Government's commitment to drive investment in the State's future sectors.

Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti recognized the opportunity to investigate port infrastructure and decarbonization efforts with the Port of Himeji, given its status as one of the leading importers of LNG from PPA ports. The collaboration aims to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between the two ports on renewable energy and net zero carbon emission efforts.

The MoU strengthens the Sister State relationship between Western Australia (WA) and Hyogo Prefecture, established in 1981. The Port of Himeji has extensive trading links with WA, importing LNG, iron ore, oil, and salt from Pilbara ports. This partnership is expected to help PPA work with Japanese trading partners to drive local jobs in the region.

Premier McGowan stated that the Pilbara has enormous growth potential in renewable hydrogen, ammonia, and critical minerals. He emphasized that the PPA is well-positioned to provide renewable energy exports not only to Australia but also across the world.

During his visit to Japan, a PPA team will visit the Harima coastline area to learn more about its carbon-neutral port concept. The collaboration between the two ports will officially begin in 2024, focusing on the export of hydrogen.

Minister Saffioti reaffirms the McGowan Government's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. She expressed anticipation for the collaboration and knowledge exchange between the ports as they transition to green energy.

WA's ports, including those in the Pilbara, are vital to the State's export sectors and will play an essential role as WA embraces new low-carbon businesses and possibilities. This strategic partnership between the PPA and the Port of Himeji is a significant step towards a greener future for both WA and Japan, and a testament to the growing potential of the hydrogen market.
