Airbus A330 MRTT+ Boosts Thai Air Force Capabilities
Airbus has secured a significant order from the Royal Thai Air Force for the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport Plus (MRTT+). The aircraft, set to be delivered in 2029, boasts enhanced capabilities and will undergo conversion in Spain, starting in 2026.
The MRTT+ will have an increased maximum take-off weight of 242 tonnes, expanding its range and fuel offload capacity. This will significantly strengthen Thailand's defence posture and enhance its capacity for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
The aircraft will feature both boom and hose-and-drogue refuelling systems, a medical evacuation kit, and a VVIP cabin configuration. It introduces innovations from the A330-800 commercial airliner, including Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, new aerodynamics and wing-tips, which cut fuel burn by up to 8 percent and reduce noise.
Airbus has also signed an expanded memorandum of understanding with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) to provide in-country maintenance for the MRTT+, extending existing cooperation on Thailand's C295 fleet.
The Royal Thai Air Force's acquisition of the Airbus A330 MRTT+ is expected to bolster its defence capabilities and humanitarian response. The aircraft's enhanced features and improved efficiency will contribute to Thailand's air force modernisation.
