Airbus Conducts Trials with Sustainable Marine Fuel

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions and lessen the impact of its industrial activities on the environment, Airbus has initiated a groundbreaking test campaign for renewable fuel on one of its vessels. The 'Ciudad de Cadiz', an Airbus vessel operated by LDA, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, will be the first to use renewable fuel for the Saint-Nazaire-Tunis-Naples-Saint-Nazaire route.

The test campaign, which began at the end of December 2022, will last for 18 months. During this period, around a third of the total fuel (approximately 330 tons) will be renewable, produced by Neste in Rotterdam from Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). This initiative marks a significant step towards Airbus's ambition to reduce its carbon emissions.

The renewable fuel used in this test campaign is free of fossil fuels and additives, making it a sustainable choice for maritime transportation. The test campaign aims to evaluate the performance of the renewable fuel and the vessel's engine, providing valuable insights into the potential of renewable fuels in the maritime sector.

Airbus has a history of introducing alternative energy solutions across different transportation methods, including air, road, and maritime. In 2021, the company initiated the use of biogas trucks for transporting aircraft sections and major components across its production sites in Europe. Previously, Airbus has also introduced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for its Beluga operations.

The test campaign for renewable fuel on Airbus vessels is part of a broader trend in the maritime sector, where renewable fuels like HVO100 are being adopted in European regions for emissions reduction. However, specific connections to Airbus vessels or the 'Ciudad de Cadiz' are not widely documented in publicly available information.

If successful, this test campaign could pave the way for wider adoption of renewable fuels in Airbus's maritime operations, potentially saving around 6,000 tons of CO emissions on this route alone in just one year. The test campaign will confirm by how much the use of renewable fuel has been able to reduce CO emissions, contributing to Airbus's ongoing efforts to make sustainable choices in its operations.
