Aldi stores will not be established in Arheligen
In a surprising turn of events, the city of Darmstadt has announced the discontinuation of the "New Living in the Town Center" project, which was set to be developed by Aldi. This announcement was made on Wednesday evening, contradicting previous reports that suggested the project was moving forward.
The project's cancellation comes amidst a challenging period for Darmstadt's local supply, with both REWE and NETTO announcing withdrawals and closure intentions in the city. Resistance from Arheilgen residents arose at the start of planning for the Aldi project on Frankfurt Street.
Mayor Hanno Benz (SPD) welcomed the decision by Aldi and has been a vocal advocate for ending the planning. The mayor has expressed a desire to continue discussions with the responsible parties regarding Aldi Süd's potential continued investment in the Darmstadt location, with a meeting scheduled for early February.
However, no specific reasons for the discontinuation of the Aldi project or updates on the company's future investments in the city have been widely reported. Aldi typically manages its projects and investments locally, with official municipal or company announcements. For detailed or updated information, it is recommended to check official Aldi press releases, local news sources, or Darmstadt city council announcements, or to make direct inquiries with Aldi's regional offices in Hessen.
Meanwhile, the city is looking to convert further areas in the Edelstein quarter into residential space. This decision was welcomed by Planning Commissioner Michael Kolmer (B90/Greens) and Commissioners Wandrey. The Greens' association in Darmstadt is currently defending itself against criticism of its financial policy by the FDP district association.
The city council is scheduled to approve the city budget in April. The FDP does not support the draft budget, which was agreed upon by CDU, Greens, SPD, and Volt, and has sharply criticized Darmstadt's financial policy and its plans for the double budget for this and next year.
As the situation develops, it is clear that the discontinuation of the "New Living in the Town Center" project and Aldi's future plans in Darmstadt will remain topics of interest for the city's residents and stakeholders.
Other industry players in the city, such as REWE and NETTO, are facing challenges with withdrawals and closure intentions, contributing to Darmstadt's local supply strife. The cancellation of the "New Living in the Town Center" project, which was initially intended to be developed by Aldi, might signal a broader shift in finance and retail investment trends within the city.
