Arbitration Decision Extends Successful Run of Venture Global LNG
In a significant move for the U.S. LNG industry, Energy Secretary Chris Wright has given the final authorisation for gas exports to non-FTA countries from Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass project. This decision marks a return to "regular order" on LNG exports following a year-long pause by former President Joe Biden.
The CP2 LNG project, a phase 1 investment of $15.1 billion, is currently under development and is set to be one of the largest LNG exporters in the U.S. Once completed, CP2 will have an expected production capacity of 28 million metric tons per annum (MTPA).
Venture Global, the company behind the CP2 project, has already made significant progress with its LNG projects. The Calcasieu Pass project, which started producing LNG in January 2022, reached commercial operations by April 2025. The second facility, Plaquemines LNG, achieved first production in December 2024 and has begun exports.
The CP2 project, fully owned by Venture Global and its shareholders, is expected to deliver reliable American LNG to the world beginning in 2027. Venture Global has secured a 20-year agreement with ENI to export 2 million metric tonnes per year of LNG from its CP2 LNG terminal.
The success of the CP2 project is attributed to the dedication and execution of the entire Venture Global team, according to Mike Sabel, CEO of Venture Global. The company reported second quarter earnings that exceeded expectations, with revenues of $3.1 billion and net income of over $400 million.
The U.S. Department of Energy recently gave a positive decision for additional gas exports from Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass project. This decision reaffirms the clarity of Venture Global's contracts with customers and benefits the U.S. LNG industry, which has been experiencing a boom since the policy changes implemented since January 2021.
The U.S. is currently the world's largest supplier of LNG and is expected to continue expanding amid exploding global demand and a favorable policy environment. The U.S.'s advancements in LNG dominance have been credited to President Trump's leadership.
In a recent development, Venture Global won an arbitration case with Shell over claims of non-delivery of liquefied natural gas starting in 2023. The arbitration panel's ruling frees Venture Global from potential liability in the case.
These advancements position Venture Global for significant growth in U.S. LNG export capacity over the next several years. The company's Calcasieu Pass project, which has been authorized for a capacity uprate, and the CP2 project, which is targeted to be in service by the third quarter of 2027, are key to this growth.
