Aschaffenburg's New Elevator: Popular but Controversial
Aschaffenburg's new elevator was opened on January 14, 2025, marking a significant step towards barrier-free access. In its first four weeks, it has already completed 12,000 trips, transporting up to 13 people at a time. The architecturally impressive structure, however, has drawn criticism due to its escalating costs.
Initially approved at 1.86 million euros, the total costs of the elevator rose to 3.18 million euros, a 71% increase. The Federal Association of Taxpayers has criticized this significant rise, attributing it to high demand for companies, corona-related raw material developments, and the impact of the Ukraine war. Despite the controversy, the elevator has proven popular and accessible, with 12,000 trips in just four weeks.
The builder of the elevator, listed in the 'Schwarze Liste' of the Bundesverbandes Steuerzahler, remains unknown, as search results did not provide this information.
The Aschaffenburg elevator, despite its high cost, has been well-received and used extensively since its opening. With a capacity of 13 people and an architecturally demanding design, it has improved accessibility in the city. However, the significant cost increase has sparked criticism from the Federal Association of Taxpayers, who have called for transparency regarding the builder and the reasons behind the escalating expenses.
