Austin's How Do You Roll Aims to Franchise 25 More Sushi Restaurants in 2026
Austin-based brothers Yuen and Peter Yung founded How Do You Roll, a successful sushi restaurant chain that caters to professionals with limited lunch breaks. The business, which opened its first location in Austin by 2008, has since expanded and aims to open 25 more franchises in the next year.
The Yung brothers, who grew up working in their parents' restaurant, sought to fill a gap in the market for quick and delicious lunchtime sushi. Peter's realization of this need inspired them to create How Do You Roll, which offers a customizable sushi menu, allowing customers to choose their own rolls, fillings, and sauces. The business model proved successful, with the first restaurant becoming profitable by 2011 and earning over $1 million in profits that year. The brothers planned to open 25 more franchises in the next twelve months, with each franchise expected to earn around $250,000 per year. To support this expansion, the founders sought a $1 million investment from the Sharks, offering 12 percent equity in their business. As of now, How Do You Roll has represented franchise restaurants in the United States only.
How Do You Roll, founded by the Yung brothers, has shown significant growth and success since its inception in Austin. With a unique business model that caters to busy professionals, the restaurant chain aims to expand further, seeking investment to open more franchises and continue its profitable trajectory.
