Autumn Assessment of Piedmontese Businesses Focuses on Energy Sector

Italy's industrial sector is grappling with a series of energy-related issues that are hindering its growth, according to Andrea Amalberto, the president of Confindustria Piemonte.

The latest predictive survey by Confindustria Piemonte shows negative indicators for production, orders, exports, and profitability for the third quarter of the year. For the manufacturing sector, which represents about two-thirds of the sample, the negative balances are more marked.

One of the key challenges is the complexity and slowness of the authorization procedures by local administrations, which also hinder the development of new renewable energy plants in Italy. Widespread opposition by citizens and local administrators to host new realities on their territories is another factor slowing down the development of these plants.

The normative system of connection for renewable energy plants in Italy creates long times for the activation of plants often already ready. National normative action by the Ministry of the Environment is necessary to guarantee faster times, priority lanes for plants, or clear national normative covers for the authorizing work of officials.

According to Amalberto, the problem of the price of energy is secondary compared to the central issues related to times and procedures. He emphasizes the importance of considering the energy mix and the renunciation of nuclear power, which today penalizes Italy.

The theme of investments in renewable energy plants remains a driver for companies, Amalberto adds. There is a slight increase in the propensity to invest, with 74.6% of the companies in the sample interested in investing.

Giuseppe Bergesio, president of the Energy Group of the Union of Industrialists of Turin, emphasizes the importance of providing updated scenarios and concrete tools for managing energy costs. Energy management tools and brokerage are of primary importance for managing costs, according to Bergesio.

Over seventy companies have joined the initiative organized by the Union of Industrialists of Turin. The Energy Group of the Union of Industrialists of Turin has a programmatic document and various activities, including updates, training, and information on energy scenarios.

By 2026, companies must take into account the impact of energy costs on their budgets and evaluate which protection tools to adopt to manage the volatility of energy and gas. The union aims to provide operational support for the energy-related choices of companies.

In an effort to tackle these issues, the Union of Industrialists of Turin has scheduled a round table discussion on energy costs for September 17. The president of the Environmental Ministry, Carsten Schneider, who should intervene to eliminate current inefficiencies in the energy systematics, is expected to participate in the discussion.

Despite these efforts, no structural solutions to the energy issue are currently in sight for the Italian industry. The energy cost in Italy is approximately 30% higher than the European average, making it a significant burden for companies. However, with increased investment propensity and a focus on renewable energy, there is hope that Italy can overcome these challenges and secure a sustainable energy future.
