Autumn marks the commencement of discussions about the latest rent mirror in an upcoming interview

The University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald is set to revolutionise its local housing market with the introduction of a rent index, scheduled for creation in September to October 2025. This development aims to provide more transparency and fairness in the rental market.

The rent index will be based on data collected from randomly selected tenants and landlords through an online survey. High participation from all households contacted is crucial to create a realistic picture of the rental market in Greifswald.

According to the Rent Index Reform Act, participation in the survey is legally binding. Anyone who receives a request for information is obliged to provide it. Failure to comply or providing false statements may result in an administrative offense, with fines of up to 5,000 euros.

The Rent Index Reform Act also mandates the collection of information from tenants and landlords, including rental agreement data, year of construction, apartment size, equipment, and type of heating. This comprehensive data base is necessary to provide a realistic picture of the rental market in Greifswald.

Private landlords' participation is particularly important as their input helps capture essential housing characteristics and rent prices to ensure a reliable determination of rent developments. The survey provides a representative sample that accurately reflects the current rent level, which is necessary to update the rent index based on actual market data rather than just price indexes.

For questions about the rent index, or to participate in the online survey, contact the Department of Geoinformation and Surveying via phone at 03834 8536-4173 or email at Mietspiegel@our website.

The rent index will be published in March 2026, marking a significant step towards a more transparent and fair local housing market in Greifswald.
