Bank Sparda frustrates credit card holders

In recent days, Sparda-Bank BW customers have reported difficulties making online payments using their credit cards, causing inconvenience for many as they prepare for upcoming travel and other online transactions.

The root of the problem lies in an IT upgrade at the bank, which has resulted in a new verification procedure for credit card payments. This procedure has caused issues for customers who have not yet received their new cards.

The Consumer Protection Agency of Baden-Württemberg has issued a warning to Sparda-Bank regarding a "classic hidden contract" related to the new credit card. Meanwhile, the bank has offered two solutions to customers experiencing problems: a free Debit Mastercard, which functions like a classic credit card, especially for travel in Europe, or a classic Mastercard (Orange) with a travel insurance package and a 60 Euro annual fee.

Customers can retrieve card data and use it for e-commerce after the card is displayed online, but it must be unlocked for 3D Secure. Instructions for unlocking the card for 3D Secure are available on the bank's homepage. The physical credit card will be sent in the next few days and is not needed for online payments.

The IT upgrade has caused major problems for customers trying to make online payments, not just for booking tickets but also for other services like ETA applications and travel bookings. A customer whose family holiday in Denmark is approaching reported feeling furious about the situation and the lack of help from the bank when she called for assistance.

Sparda-Bank BW, the sixth-largest cooperative bank in Germany with a balance sheet total of 15 billion euros (2024), is receiving a mix of positive and negative feedback from customers regarding their service during this transition. The bank has an extension until August 12, 2025, from the Consumer Protection Agency, and may face a lawsuit if a cease and desist declaration is not received.

To resolve credit card payment issues specifically related to Sparda-Bank BW's IT change, customers should: - Check official communications from Sparda-Bank BW for advisories or instructions. - Use the bank's hotline or online banking support chat. - Confirm if there are temporary restrictions or outages on credit card payments. - Inquire about alternatives such as using debit cards linked to Girokonto accounts or other electronic payment options.

Without specific official information from Sparda-Bank BW on this issue, direct contact with the bank remains the best way to resolve issues and clarify acceptable alternative payment methods. It's worth noting that the IT change mainly affects online banking customers, with 82% (over 230,000) already switched over.

As the situation continues to evolve, it's essential for customers to stay informed and proactive in seeking solutions from the bank. With the upcoming holiday season and travel plans, it's crucial for customers to have access to reliable payment methods to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

  1. The issues with online payments caused by Sparda-Bank BW's IT upgrade are not limited to booking tickets; they also affect ETA applications, travel bookings, and other business transactions, creating challenges for customers preparing for upcoming trips.
  2. To mitigate difficulties with credit card payments resulting from Sparda-Bank BW's IT upgrade, customers can consider temporarily using a Debit Mastercard (free) or a classic Mastercard (Orange) with a travel insurance package and a 60 Euro annual fee, which are currently offered as solutions by the bank.
