Stepping Up the Fight Against Tax Evasion in Bavaria

Bayern intensifies pursuit of tax dodgers - Bavaria intensifies pursuit of tax offenders

Catching tax evaders is getting tougher for Bavaria's authorities. To boost their efforts, a new special unit has been established at the Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office. As Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (CSU) from Munich put it, "Most folks are honest, and we're after the rascals who try to dodge their taxes."

The intricacies of tax fraud cases make them tricky to prove, plus investigations can be laborious and convoluted. With new types of offenses constantly emerging and massive amounts of data to sift through, Bavaria's justice system is eager to specialize.

50 Billion Euros Stolen Every Year

The German Tax Union estimates that tax evasion costs the German government around 50 billion euros annually. This new Competence Center for Tax Law, launched on February 1st, according to Eisenreich, is here to counteract this loss.

The team consists of four public prosecutors led by Senior Public Prosecutor Susanne Gehrke-Haibl. They'll focus on letterbox companies in tax havens and complex financial deals like Cum-Ex transactions.

This center serves as a hub for collecting, coordinating, and sharing tax law expertise. It's also available for specialized questions from all public prosecutors within Munich's Public Prosecutor Office. Further training in tax law, collaborating with other authorities, and networking with other public prosecutors will follow.

Aiming for Efficient Pursuit of Tax Fraud

Reinhard Röttle, the General Public Prosecutor, welcomes the Competence Center for Tax Law, stating, "This concentration of specialized knowledge in tax law enriches our fight against tax fraud." The center offers support for complex individual cases while ensuring high-level tax law knowledge thrives across the Public Prosecutor's Offices through training and familiarization with other authorities. "That tightens up our pursuit of tax fraud," Röttle concludes.
