Bavarian Climate Funding Exhausted, Greens Push for More Support
Bavarian climate protection funding has run out, leaving municipalities unable to apply for new projects since September 18, 2024. The state Greens urge the coalition to continue funding, increase the climate budget, and make climate protection a mandatory task for municipalities.
Since the funding began, over €45 million has been approved for around 460 municipal climate protection projects, saving approximately 11,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Despite this success, the approval rate for projects has been decreasing annually since 2020. Less than one in twenty Bavarian municipalities have been able to apply for funding so far.
Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber, from the ruling CSU party, acknowledges the importance of climate protection and supports continuing the funding directive beyond 2026. However, the Greens criticise the coalition's narrow calculation of the funding pot. They argue that the CSU and Free Voters, the current coalition partners, have not allocated enough funds to meet Bavarian climate goals.
With the funding exhausted, Bavarian municipalities are now unable to submit new climate protection applications. The Greens call for increased funding and mandatory climate protection tasks for municipalities. The coalition must decide whether to heed these calls and extend the funding beyond 2026 to continue supporting Bavarian climate initiatives.
