Berlin Aims for Solar Power Boom by 2035
Berlin's solar panels capacity stands at 459 megawatt peak, thanks to 53,000 installations. This accounts for around 5.6% of the city's electricity. Now, Economics Senator Franziska Giffey aims to boost this significantly.
Giffey plans to increase Berlin's solar panels capacity to 4,400 megawatt peak by 2035. This ambitious target aims to generate a quarter of the city's electricity from solar power. Currently, many installations are small balcony systems. Giffey wants to shift focus to larger installations on company roofs and other owners' roofs, like the city's largest photovoltaic plant on the exhibition grounds. This strategic shift will help Berlin move closer to its goal of becoming a climate-neutral metropolis by 2045.
By 2035, Berlin aims to generate 25% of its electricity from solar power, up from the current 5.6%. This will involve a shift towards larger-scale rooftop installations, as seen in the city's largest photovoltaic plant. This expansion is a key step in Berlin's journey towards climate neutrality by 2045.
