Berlin Joins Race to Host Olympics, Allocates €6M for Bid
Berlin is vying for the chance to host the Olympic Games, joining a national competition with Hamburg, Munich, and the Rhine-Ruhr region. The city's Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, views this opportunity as a boon for both Berlin and Germany.
Berlin is preparing for this bid with a budget of up to six million euros allocated for the financial years 2025 to 2027. A board of trustees, led by Kai Wegner and Senator Iris Spranger, will guide the process, aiming to engage and convince the local population.
The event's year is still undecided, with 2036, 2040, and 2044 under consideration. A special project group, headed by Berlin's Olympic representative Kaweh Niroomand, will be established to work on the bid. This group will create up to twelve full-time positions, with an additional four in the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport.
Berlin's bid for the Olympics is part of a larger national competition. The German applicant will be chosen around a year from now, with a decision on the German candidate expected in the fall of 2026 following a referendum in June of that year.
