BMW reaches 7-millionth U.S. vehicle production milestone
BMW Reaches Seven-Millionth Vehicle Milestone at Spartanburg Plant
BMW's seven-millionth vehicle was assembled at the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, marking a significant milestone in the plant's 30-year history of manufacturing BMW vehicles.
A Legacy of Success
The Spartanburg plant, which began operations in 1994, has grown to become the largest BMW manufacturing facility worldwide. Over the years, it has specialised in assembling BMW Sports Activity Vehicles (SAVs), including models such as X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM. The plant currently assembles over 1,500 vehicles daily, totalling up to 450,000 vehicles annually.
Investing in the Future
In 2022, BMW announced a $1.7 billion investment to enhance its U.S. operations. This includes $1 billion for preparing Plant Spartanburg for the assembly of fully electric vehicles and $700 million for a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, South Carolina. The Woodruff plant has completed construction and equipment installation, and is preparing battery modules for electric vehicles, with production expected by late 2026.
By 2030, BMW plans to assemble at least six fully electric models in the United States. Plant Spartanburg will support three drivetrain technologies: fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and highly efficient internal combustion engines, providing customers with diverse mobility solutions.
An Economic Powerhouse
BMW's U.S. presence extends beyond Spartanburg, with nearly 30 locations across 12 states. The sales network comprises 350 BMW retailers, 144 motorcycle dealers, 105 MINI dealers, and 38 Rolls-Royce dealers across the U.S. BMW’s U.S. operations support over 120,000 jobs and contribute more than $43 billion annually to the U.S. economy.
A Testament to Quality
Dr. Robert Engelhorn, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing, praised the quality of the products, supplier network, and associates at the plant. The special BMW Alpina XB7 SUV, finished in Alpina Green Metallic, now belongs to the BMW Historic Collection, a testament to the great products, quality of the supplier network, and the unwavering commitment and dedication of the associates at the plant.
As BMW North America celebrates its 50th anniversary during 2025, the seven-millionth vehicle assembled in the U.S. at Spartanburg stands as a testament to the company's commitment to innovation, quality, and growth in the United States.
