Business associate of Prince William meets untimely demise, following alleged incident of choking on a bee, triggering a substantial £3 billion inheritance dispute.

In a shocking turn of events, the death of Indian billionaire Sunjay Kapur, chairman and heir to the £2.7 billion (approx ₹30,000 crore) automotive components giant Sona Comstar, has sparked a fierce family succession battle. Kapur passed away from natural causes—specifically a heart attack linked to left ventricular hypertrophy and ischemic heart disease—on June 12, 2025, while playing polo in Surrey, UK.

Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, has alleged foul play, suggesting her son’s death might be part of a "transnational conspiracy" involving suspicious financial deals and forged documents. She has called for a deeper criminal investigation.

Following Kapur's death, the company appointed a new chairman shortly after, and his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, was named a non-executive director in July 2025 amid the dispute. Rani Kapur claims that some individuals exploited the family's grief to "wrest control and usurp the family legacy," urging Sona Comstar’s board to postpone the annual general meeting and oppose recent appointments.

The ensuing power struggle revolves around control of Sona Comstar and inheritance of a significant fortune. Sunjay Kapur was also known for his high-profile social connections, including a friendship with Prince William, adding international attention to the conflict.

The match in which Sunjay Kapur died was a semi-final match in the Cartier Queen’s Cup at the Guards Polo Club, a club closely associated with the Royal family. The club has expressed condolences to Sunjay Kapur's widow, children, and Aureus team-mates.

Sunjay Kapur was married to Priya Sachdev Kapur, and they had a son named Azarias Kapur. Priya Sachdev Kapur's office shared the coroner's report, which confirmed that Sunjay Kapur died of natural causes. However, Rani Kapur wrote a letter on July 24 to the board, accusing them of exploiting the family's grief to wrestle control of the company. She claimed that Sunjay Kapur made her the sole beneficiary of his estate and majority shareholder of the Sona Group, but was blocked from accessing her bank accounts and did not authorise appointments to represent her family.

In summary, the core details of the dispute include:

  • Sunjay Kapur’s death officially declared natural but contested by his mother alleging murder and conspiracy.
  • The ensuing power struggle revolves around control of Sona Comstar and inheritance of a significant fortune.
  • Key figures include Rani Kapur (mother), Priya Sachdev Kapur (widow), and the company’s board.
  • Accusations include forged documents, pressuring of family members, and suspicious timing of corporate appointments.

This has created a high-profile inheritance and corporate succession conflict at one of India’s largest automotive component firms following the sudden and contested death of Sunjay Kapur. Sona Comstar has been contacted for comment.
