Hamburg's S-Bahn Main Station Undergoes Renovation

Hamburg's S-Bahn main station is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation as part of a larger modernization project on the Hamburg–Berlin railway line. The renovation, which started in early August 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of April 2026, will impact various S-Bahn and regional train lines.

Schedule and Affected Lines

The renovation is scheduled to last approximately 9 months. During this period, the entire Hamburg–Berlin main line, including S-Bahn and regional trains along the route, will be closed to passenger and freight traffic. Stations on the line such as Neustadt (Dosse) and Wittenberge, where other lines branch off, are also affected. Long-distance trains such as EuroCity services between Prague and Hamburg are truncated at Berlin, requiring passengers to change trains there.

Alternative Routes and Services During Construction

Local train services are replaced by extensive bus replacement services on 28 routes, with over 170 buses deployed to maintain local connections. Long-distance trains are rerouted via alternative lines through Stendal and Uelzen, adding roughly 15 to 25 minutes to journey times. It is important to note that no train service operates on the direct route Hamburg <> Ludwigslust <> Wittenberge <> Berlin-Spandau during construction.

DB InfraGO and Deutsche Bahn provide detailed replacement transport plans and updated information online.

Impact on S-Bahn Lines

The S1 towards Airport/Poppenbüttel and the S3 towards Neugraben now stop at track 4, where only the S2 towards Bergedorf and the S5 towards Stade usually stop. The S2 will run at 20-minute intervals between Aumühle and Bergedorf. Passengers on S5 will terminate at Diebsteich station during construction work. The S2 will run through the city tunnel (Jungfernstieg - Stadthausbrücke - Landungsbrücken - Reeperbahn - Köhlbrandtunnel) to Altona before continuing its usual route. Currently, four S-Bahn lines are sharing a single track due to the renovation work.

Advice for Passengers

Passengers are advised to switch to U-Bahn lines U3, U2, or U4 between the main station and Berliner Tor. Deutsche Bahn recommends avoiding changing trains at the main station if possible and using other S or U-Bahn lines at Dammtor or Jungfernstieg instead. A change to line S3 is necessary for passengers on S5 at Diebsteich. Longer waiting times in the trains before the main station and greater congestion on the half-closed platform are expected due to the shared track.

Passengers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel during this renovation period. Provisional material will temporarily cover the new platform edges at the beginning of September. Between the main station and Hammerbrook, there will be a bus replacement service. On August 30th and 31st, tracks between the main station and Berliner Tor (S1, S2) and between the main station and Hammerbrook (S2, S5) will not be available. Work on the final surface of the new platform edges at the main station will continue during the autumn holidays.

The renovation on track 3 is scheduled to last until September 3rd. From August 19th, track 4 will be renovated and all trains will only stop on track 3. Construction at the main station will not be fully completed after the summer holidays.

This initial phase of the Berlin–Hamburg line modernization is part of a wider German rail infrastructure program with completion expected by 2036. The aim is to stabilize and improve reliability on this critical rail corridor. The renovation includes new tracks, modernized signaling and interlock systems, platform extensions, and station modernizations to improve the passenger experience.

  1. The renovation of Hamburg's S-Bahn main station is part of a larger modernization project in the transportation industry, which also includes finance for the enhancement of the Hamburg–Berlin railway line.
  2. Alternative services, such as extensive bus replacement services and rerouted long-distance trains, have been implemented in the finance sector to maintain public-transit connections during the 9-month closure of the Hamburg–Berlin main line for transportation projects.
