It was rumored that the late Pope Francis and the freshly chosen Pope Leo XIV shared a tight bond. Snaps of Prevost and Bergoglio suggest this connection, as does the speech he delivered yesterday to the folks at St. Peter's Square. He quoted Pope Francis thrice.
Yet, the newly crowned pope will face some perplexing moments - Francis didn't leave him with a walk in the park. Not so much about the direction of the new papacy, but rather unfinished reforms and paused projects. Francis sparked optimism, particularly concerning a possible shift in the Church toward more liberal views. However, the report card appears to be somewhat underwhelming. Setbacks were due to fierce opposition, stall, and the occasional misstep.

The Agenda Spills Over
The Italian daily newspaper "La Repubblica" lists the most pressing endeavors awaiting Pope Leo XIV: the Vatican's finances in the red, measures to curb corruption, the implementation of synodality, reducing bureaucracy, fighting abuse, and accepting same-sex unions for women in the diaconate.
Many of these topics stirred up great unrest during the papacy of Francis, not only among cardinals and Vatican bigwigs, but also in remote dioceses in Africa and Asia and their clerical overseers.

Finances in the Vatican
The pope isn't just the spiritual head of the Catholic Church. He's also the head of Vatican City itself. A state boasting a staff of 5,000 employees within the Vatican alone, as well as presence in 189 countries. The immense finances are undoubtedly one of the primary issues, with the annual deficit reported at around 80 million euros.
Despite decreasing cardinals' salaries three times in the past four years by Francis, his "Zero Deficit" program faced little success. Moreover, the fundraising commission he set up seems to have dwindled in efficiency. The Vatican pension fund's portfolio is currently at €650 million.

Dealing with Abuse
There is still a need for measures that apply to all dioceses. Unfortunately, none have been implemented yet, leaving the Church with the distressing feeling that it is not adequately addressing its responsibility to thoroughly go after every case.

Embracing LGBTQ+ Populations
The new Pope takes the reins amidst a divided Church - the chasm has deepened under Francis. For instance, divorced and remarried individuals can only receive communion in extraordinary circumstances. However, the real controversy flared up with the Vatican document "Fiducia Supplicans" from 2023, which authorized blessings for same-sex couples.
German cardinal and theologian Gerhard Ludwig Müller, a fierce opponent of these openings, enjoys strong support from believers in Africa and Asia.

The Role of Women
The issue of diakonia remains unresolved. Pope Francis created hope in this regard, often emphasizing the importance of transferring more responsibilities to women within the Vatican. During his last hospital stay, he appointed Franciscan Sister Raffaella Petrini as the head of the Vatican state government, assisted by Sister Alessandra Smerilli, an economist and member of the Daughters of Mary. In January of this year, he appointed Missionary Sister Simona Brambilla as the prefect of the Dicastery for the Life-Consecrated and Apostolic Life.
Yet, the diakonia did not materialize, despite the topic being repeatedly raised. German Bishops' Conference Chairman Georg Bätzing described it as a fundamental and future-determining issue.

Commonalities
As noted at the beginning, Francis and Leo XIV seemed to share a common bond. Their backgrounds (one in Argentina, the other in Peru for years) among the common folk hint at similarities, particularly in their interpretation of the Gospel. Therefore, Pope Leo XIV might mirror Francis' footsteps, but with a pragmatic approach. Pragmatism is said to be one of the qualities that set him apart from Pope Francis and was crucial to his election as the Holy Father.
