Unrest and speculation about the closure of Lecas paper mills in Charente, leading to social tension

Charente's paper mills shutdown sparks controversy and doubts surrounding their liquidation, stirring up local social unrest.

In the picturesque region of Charente, France, the former parent company of Lecas Industries, Hamelin, finds itself at the centre of controversy. The closure of Lecas Industries' paper mill in Nersac, which laid off 56 employees, has led to a series of protests aimed at raising awareness of the employees' struggle.

The closure, primarily due to economic difficulties and the challenging market conditions, was part of a broader trend of decline in traditional paper manufacturing in the region. Factors such as decreasing demand, rising production costs, and pressure from international competition have contributed to this trend.

The aftermath of the closure has been marked by disputes and dissatisfaction among the affected employees. The promised redundancy plan, or "plan de départs volontaires," was reportedly not fully respected or implemented as initially assured by the company management. This has led to tensions and calls for better support and compensation.

Many employees felt that the company did not adequately support their transition or provide sufficient financial security, leaving them financially strapped and morally defeated. The suspension of the redundancy plan (PSE) in late June and the subsequent judicial liquidation of Lecas Industries, which was aimed at avoiding paying the PSE, have added to their grievances.

The employees' anger is directed at the management's maneuvers deemed "unfair." In a bold move, they have been handing out flyers to passersby, inviting people to boycott Oxford agendas, a brand of Hamelin, as a form of protest.

Hamelin, a Normandy-based company and Europe's leading manufacturer of school and office supplies, has been the target of these protests. The company, which obtained the judicial liquidation of Lecas Industries, has been accused of not doing enough to support its former employees.

The most recent protest took place near a neighboring town's supermarket on August 8th evening. The protesting employees, who are determined to continue the pressure, have planned a new action in two weeks.

As the situation unfolds, the former Lecas Industries employees hope for a resolution that will provide them with the support and compensation they deserve, and restore their faith in the company they once served.

  1. The challenging market conditions in the traditional paper manufacturing industry, as faced by Lecas Industries, have also affected Hamelin, a leading manufacturer of school and office supplies in Europe.
  2. The former employees of Lecas Industries, who were laid off after the closure of its paper mill, are seeking financial support and compensation, as they feel the company did not adequately provide for their transition.
  3. In an effort to exert pressure on Hamelin, the affected employees are encouraging a boycott of the Oxford agendas brand, a product of Hamelin, as part of their ongoing protests.
