Chevron Refinery Fire in El Segundo: No Injuries, Cause Unknown
An explosion and subsequent fire broke out at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, California, on Thursday night. Despite the incident, no injuries were reported, and no evacuations were necessary.
The fire was contained to one area of the refinery by firefighter crews, with plumes of smoke rising into the sky. The cause of the fire remains unknown, according to El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel. All refinery personnel and contractors were accounted for following the incident, as confirmed by Chevron spokesperson Allison Cook.
California Governor Gavin Newsom was promptly briefed on the situation and coordinated with local and state agencies to ensure public safety. The El Segundo facility is the largest oil refinery on the US West Coast, processing over 276,000 barrels of crude per day.
The Chevron refinery incident on Thursday night resulted in no injuries or evacuations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The refinery, a significant part of California's oil infrastructure, continues to operate with heightened safety measures in place.
