China's total sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) have exceeded 40 million units
China's Electric Vehicle Sales Surpass 40 Million Units
In a significant milestone for the global automotive industry, China has announced that its cumulative sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) have surpassed 40 million units. The announcement was made at a live-streamed event by a spokesperson from the State Council Information Office.
China has been the world's top producer and seller of NEVs for 10 consecutive years, a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. The strong growth of Chinese car brands in Europe, particularly brands like BYD and MG, has been reported in the EV Industry, with Chinese car manufacturers doubling their share in Europe in the first half of 2025.
The majority of NEVs in China encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles. According to data compiled by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), BEVs accounted for 6.16 million units of China's NEV sales during January-August, a 46.06 percent year-on-year increase. PHEV sales in China for the same period amounted to 3.43 million units, a 22.04 percent year-on-year increase.
The sales of NEVs in China have contributed to global carbon reduction goals, with the sales of NEVs in China surging tenfold from about 1.3 million units in 2020 to nearly 13 million units in 2024. The Chinese government's automotive industry growth stabilization plan, outlined by eight government departments including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), aims for NEV sales of around 15.5 million units this year, representing about 20 percent year-on-year growth.
The increase in NEV sales in China was reported by our publication, with China's NEV sales for the first eight months of this year reaching 9.59 million units, a 36.37 percent year-on-year increase. This explosive growth over the past five years has positioned China as a global leader in the adoption and production of electric vehicles.
In 2025, China targets annual automobile sales of about 32.3 million units, a 3 percent year-on-year growth. The Chinese government's commitment to promoting the adoption of NEVs is evident in these ambitious targets, which aim to strike a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The information about China's NEV sales was announced at a press conference today, marking a significant moment in the country's efforts to combat climate change and promote clean energy solutions. As China continues to lead the way in electric vehicle adoption, it sets an example for other countries to follow in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.
