Church of Waiapu experiences a surge following the implementation of 'Mission Renewal Program'
Rev. Carl Tinnion Brings Fresh Perspective to the Diocese of Waiapu
Rev. Carl Tinnion, the Mission Rejuvenator in the Diocese of Waiapu, is driving a wave of change in the region. His appointment in 2022 by Bishop Andrew Hedge was a strategic move to inject new life into the diocese.
Tinnion, known for his background in visual arts and his curiosity, love of experimentation, and willingness to take risks, has been making a significant impact. He credits the open welcome he received from everyone he worked with in the diocese for drawing out new expressions of mission.
One of Tinnion's first initiatives was launching a community cafe in Tauranga, backed by a local church. His innovative approach extended to the spiritual realm as well, with the introduction of a 24-7 prayer room for young people and an outdoor "Forest Cathedral" at the annual inter-denominational Evangelical Christian gathering.
Tinnion's inspiration for these ventures can be traced back to the book "Canoeing the Mountains" by Tod Bolsinger. This metaphor for navigating new endeavors, based on the story of Merriweather Lewis and William Clark, has been a guiding light in Tinnion's mission to adapt and innovate.
Tinnion has also supported new family-shaped ministries and trialed a Spanish-speaking worship night. His work has resulted in the launch of new Christmas, Easter, and midwinter festivals, as well as an international food festival with an ESOL group.
In addition to his role in the Diocese of Waiapu, Tinnion now works part-time as a new national Mission Catalyst for NZCMS. His extensive background in mission work, having spent 30 years with the youth missionary organization YWAM and more than 15 years linked with the Anglican Fresh Expressions movement in the U.K., is proving invaluable.
Tinnion's belief in the universality of the principles he's learned for ministry and mission is evident in his approach. He thinks a major part of the church's future will be attracting non-Anglicans to a more sacramental worldview. He also advocates for new leadership pathways as a crucial component of the church's future.
The Diocese of Waiapu has seen an increase in new mission activities over the last three years, a testament to Tinnion's impact. His work with Rev. Linda King in Whakatane and her parishioner Ross Anderson as they opened a surf church, as well as his support for a citywide ecumenical worship night called "Behold," are just a few examples of his successful collaborations.
Tinnion's innovative spirit and commitment to mission work are breathing new life into the Diocese of Waiapu, demonstrating that even in challenging times, there is always room for growth and change.
