CII Launches Swachh Vayu-Dirghayu to Fight NCR Air Pollution
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched the Swachh Vayu-Dirghayu initiative, aiming to reduce air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR). Proposed by Rakesh Bharti Mittal and launched in August 2020, the campaign seeks voluntary commitments from stakeholders to improve air quality.
The Clean Air - Better Life campaign, as it is known, aims to develop an integrated approach involving policy-makers, industry, academia, community, and civil society. It seeks to build consensus and get buy-in from stakeholders for actions to improve air quality in NCR.
CII has recommended several measures to tackle air pollution. Industrial sources of pollution, such as thermal power plants and foundries, should be encouraged to switch to cleaner fuels. The construction industry should use water sprinkling, curtains, and dust suppression units to reduce air pollution. To reduce PM 2.5 levels, CII has suggested collecting soil and road dust by vacuum cleaning and using it for filling low-lying areas. Vehicles should be retrofitted, and zero-idling should be enforced to reduce pollution from vehicles. The Government is also encouraged to incentivize the use of 'happy seeder' to convert rice straw into mulch and reduce burning.
The Swachh Vayu-Dirghayu initiative is a step towards cleaner air in Delhi NCR. With industry pledging to partner with the Government, the campaign seeks to create a comprehensive approach to tackle air pollution. By implementing these recommendations, the region can strive for improved air quality and longer, healthier lives.
