Lünen City Council Approves 2025 Budget and Financial Stability Concept

In a significant move, the City Council of Lünen approved the budget for the year 2025 and the associated Financial Stability Concept (FSC) during an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, September 10. This decision sets the financial framework for the city of Lünen for the coming years.

Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns explained that the approval restores the city's ability to act and enables important investments. He instructed the administration to prepare a contractual safeguard for subsidies from 2026 onwards to provide a reliable perspective for all parties involved.

The budget addresses themes such as climate protection, sustainability, education, and security. It allows for the payment of subsidies for the ongoing operation of sports clubs and various carriers, including daycare centers and after-school care. Treasurer Dr. André Jethon explained that these steps are unfortunate but necessary.

The FSC includes necessary tax adjustments to be implemented gradually. These tax adjustments are intended to ensure the budget's approval while minimizing the burden on citizens compared to the draft budget.

Feasibility studies are initiated to improve the cycling infrastructure, introduce digital parking management, and strengthen the city's tree population. Additionally, plans are made to add more positions in kindergartens, the music school, and public order partnerships.

The budget highlights the city's continued financial strain due to rising, uncontrollable expenses, insufficient financial support from the federal and state governments, and the lingering effects of global crises. Despite these challenges, the city council is working diligently to ensure a secure financial future for Lünen.

Mayor Kleine-Frauns thanked all those involved, particularly the treasurer Dr. André Jethon and the finance commission, for finding a solution. The contractual safeguard is intended to ensure the continuation of subsidies for sports clubs and various carriers in the future, providing a sense of security and stability for all involved.

The name of the financial officer involved in developing the financial stability concept for the city of Lünen in 2025 is not publicly available. Nonetheless, the approval of the budget and the FSC marks a crucial step towards a more secure financial future for the city of Lünen.
