Leaping into Reminiscence...
First Job Shenanigans
"City of London regains vibrancy and activity," says Knight Frank's head of London offices, commenting on the city's resurgence.
I juggled a newspaper route with breakfast waiting at the Moat House Hotel, serving a colourful assortment of characters.
City's Inaugural Steps
My initial foray into London involved retail on vibrant Carnaby Street in 1990. Sadly, my fashion eye was as sharp as a blind squirrel's, so I completed my degree and nabbed a spot on a surveying practice's graduate scheme.
Property Fever
Encouraged by my grandfather to delve into the commercial aspect of the property industry, I followed his advice and haven't looked back since.
City's Allure and Imperfections
I'm smitten by the City of London's bustling energy and incessant reinvention. With the sun out, the streets teem with life, as bars and eateries spill out into the streets. Recently, Knight Frank set up shop at 1 Liverpool Street, right by the Elizabeth Line entrance. It's a prime location with Broadgate, Spitalfields, and Devonshire Square within easy reach.
A slight niggle is that the City could be more accommodating to nurturing fledgling entrepreneurs and new ventures for future success stories.
Legendary Interviews
Interviewing the legendary Irvine Sellar for a stint on his iconic development, The Shard, still stands out in my memory. Needless to say, he put me through the wringer, but I emerged victorious.
Embarrassing Mishaps
A particularly awkward interview moment? A nostril-related incident during a high-pressure client pitch on the 30th floor of a towering building. Humor definitely ensued, but it wasn't the win we'd hoped for.
Greatest Achievements
Taking up my role as head of London offices at Knight Frank was a proud moment. I've been part of the partnership for nearly 25 years and work alongside an incredible team in the world's most dynamic market. It's an even sweeter victory because my son is dipping his toes into real estate. Watching him embark on his professional journey in the evolving industry is a joy.
Role Models and Wise Words
I respect anyone bold enough to stake their claim and stick to their convictions. As for the best business advice I've received: trust is everything, and team up with folks who outshine you.
Outlook for the Future
London's current demand-supply scenario ensures a resilient market, promising positive rental growth for prime offices over the next five years. More businesses than ever are seeking to upgrade their workspaces, and the growing popularity of office-first work policies enhances investor confidence. The city is brimming with energy, and it's fantastic to see more people back in town.
Mealtime Escapades
For lunch, I'd choose Sweetings on QVS - a timeless establishment that delivers excellent cuisine and service.
Post-work libations? A local Yorkshire pub, Ye Old Watling, for a pint, or The Ned for some prime people-watching.
Midweek Abode
A flat in Marylebone to save commuting time after work events and client dinners.
Weekend Getaways
My weekends are spent in a rural paradise in West Berkshire, enjoying the beautiful outdoors, long walks, and bike rides with my family and furry friends. The Bell at Aldworth serves the best pint of 'Chairman Dave'.
Two Weeks Off and Accounting for Adventure
A couple of weeks off? Either chillaxing on Cornwall's beaches with my loved ones or embarking on an adventure, like our last trek in Nepal.
