Coal export terminal at Delta temporarily closed for 10 weeks due to fire incident
In an unexpected turn of events, a fire broke out at Westshore Terminals in Delta, British Columbia. The fire occurred on a shiploader that services Berth 1, one of the port facility's two berths.
Westshore Terminals, Canada's busiest coal export terminal, handles material mined from Canada and the western U.S. The fire caused the shutdown of Berth 1, leading to concerns about the potential impact on the terminal's operations.
A preliminary inspection concluded that Berth 1 will be out of commission for approximately 10 weeks for repairs. The company, Ridley Terminals Inc., the owner of the Westshore Terminal, has assured that they will work with their customers and the railways to minimize the impact of the berth shutdown.
Despite the disruption, operations will continue as normal at Berth 2. The terminals' throughput for the year is expected to decrease from an estimated 26 million tonnes to 24-24.5 million tonnes due to the outage.
Westshore Terminals will provide an updated timeline on the outage after a more detailed inspection and confirmation on the time required to source replacement parts. The good news is that the fire was put out by crews, and no one was hurt in the incident.
