Cogne Acciai Speciali Launches Europe's First Green Hydrogen Steel Plant

Italian steelmaker Cogne Acciai Speciali has inaugurated a pioneering hydrogen pilot plant at its Aosta site. This marks the first use of green hydrogen in an industrial heat treatment process, replacing fossil natural gas. The project, part of Italy's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), is set to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in steel production.

The hydrogen plant harnesses green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by local renewable sources. These include a hydroelectric power plant and a photovoltaic installation on the factory's rooftops. Cogne is investing approximately €8 million in the project, with additional funding from the PNRR. The 'Green Hydrogen in Cogne' initiative aims to save up to 26 tonnes of CO2 emissions per tonne of hydrogen used, demonstrating a substantial reduction in emissions from steel production, which accounts for around 7% of Europe's total CO2 emissions.

Cogne's commitment to sustainability extends beyond this project. Since 2024, the company has been using 100% certified renewable electricity for its entire steel production. Furthermore, Cogne is developing special steels for hydrogen-carrying components, such as valves, sensors, and pipelines, to support the growing hydrogen economy.

The hydrogen pilot plant at Cogne's Aosta site is a significant step towards decarbonizing steel production in Europe. By replacing fossil natural gas with green hydrogen, the project not only reduces CO2 emissions but also paves the way for a more sustainable future in the steel industry. With continued investment and innovation, Cogne is positioning itself as a leader in the green steel revolution.
