Commences construction of a $5 billion electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Georgia, announces Rivian.
Rivian, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to the U.S. EV industry with the announcement of a new factory in Georgia. The project, set to become one of the largest economic development projects in Georgia's history, is scheduled to begin construction on September 16, 2021.
The factory, spanning over 2,000 acres across Walton and Morgan counties, will boast 20 million square feet of developed space. Once operational, it is expected to produce up to 200,000 electric vehicles annually, creating approximately 7,500 jobs.
The Georgia plant will serve as Rivian's central hub for vehicle production, innovation, testing, training, and research and design. Initially, the plant will produce Rivian's upcoming R2 SUV, with plans to later manufacture the smaller R3 and R3X models, aiming to bring more affordable EVs to Rivian's lineup.
The first customer-ready vehicles from the plant are expected to roll out in 2028, marking a significant milestone in Rivian's growth. The factory is projected to be fully operational by this date.
The project has been in the works for over four years, with Rivian first announcing plans to build the plant in December 2018. The company has secured a $6.6 billion federal loan and a $1.5 billion incentive package from Georgia to finance the construction of the plant.
The factory's official inauguration was held on September 16, 2022, with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in attendance. A formal groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday with Rivian executives, state officials, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in attendance.
Vertical construction of the plant is expected to begin in 2026. In the meantime, Rivian is expanding its existing Illinois factory for initial R2 production. The company hosted a community event at the Georgia site on Sunday, offering residents and employees a chance to celebrate this milestone.
The Georgia facility is a reflection of Rivian's long-term commitment to the state and the U.S. EV sector. With its ambitious plans, Rivian is poised to make a significant impact on the EV industry in the coming years.
