Truck parking spaces are in dire straits on German autobahns, as per a survey conducted by the Auto Club Europa (ACE). The study reveals an average occupancy rate of 151% at highway rest areas between April and June, highlighting severe overcrowding.
For this survey, ACE volunteers scrutinized 132 highway rest areas between April 15 and June 3, each being inspected once on weekdays after 20:30. They discovered 5,088 parking spaces but found 7,664 parked trucks, with 76% of inspected rest areas showcasing trucks parked in entrance and exit lanes, or on the hard shoulder. Car parking spaces were also infiltrated in some instances. An alarming 16% of inspected rest areas featured vacant spaces.
The rest area with the highest occupancy was Brönninghausen near Bielefeld, featuring a jaw-dropping 438% capacity utilization. During regular hours, only eight trucks were permitted, but a startling 35 were found parked there instead. The situation is particularly dire on busiest east-west transit axes such as the A3 in Bavaria, the A5 between Frankfurt and Karlsruhe, and the metropolitan areas of Berlin and Frankfurt am Main.
The ACE spokesperson warned against interpreting individual observations too harshly, as they represent fleeting moments. Nevertheless, when scrutinizing Germany as a whole, a clear picture emerges: "Truck drivers frequently park in inappropriate spots," added ACE chairman Sven-Peter Rudolph. This predicament severely impactes drivers' required rest time and concurrently jeopardizes the safety of car drivers.
To address this conundrum, ACE demands the federal government and highway company to widen the availability of truck parking spaces across the nation, utilizing existing rest area and parking lot spaces more efficiently. Potentially hazardous areas used as emergency parking spots should be blocked off. The development of a digital system that offers real-time updates on parking availability is also recommended, enabling drivers to plan breaks more effectively.
