Comparison of Software Developers' Salaries in Nordic Countries vs. Germany

In a recent comparison of average salaries for software developers across Denmark, Norway, Germany, and Sweden, it was found that the gross salaries vary significantly among the four countries. However, the estimated take-home pay for software developers depends heavily on personal circumstances, including deductions, social security, pension contributions, and local taxes.

In Denmark, the average gross salary for software developers is not explicitly stated but is estimated to be around €53,000. With a tax rate of around 37-45%, the net pay might be approximately €30,000 - €33,000 annually.

Norway, with a higher overall tax rate compared to Sweden, has an average gross salary of around €58,000. After about 30% in taxes and deductions, the take-home pay is estimated to be around €37,000 annually.

Germany shows a higher gross average for developers, with an average salary of €108,000 for remote workers. After substantial deductions, the approximate take-home pay might be €60,000 - €65,000 annually.

Sweden, with lower fixed tax rates around 15%, has an estimated take-home pay of roughly 65-70% of the gross salary. Assuming a similar €50,000 gross salary, the take-home pay could be around €32,000-€35,000 annually.

It is worth noting that Norway and Denmark tend to have higher overall taxes compared to Sweden, but also strong welfare benefits. Germany shows a higher gross average for developers, but also substantial deductions.

In terms of industry dynamics, Germany and Sweden have more job opportunities in their tech industries compared to Denmark and Norway. The value of the Norwegian kroner is higher than the Danish kroner, but Norway pays slightly less on average.

In Germany, a person on the average German programmer salary of €5,781 a month would be left with roughly €3,562 a month after about €2,219 is taken out for pension, health insurance, unemployment insurance, and income tax. In Norway, someone earning the average software developer salary of 68,800 kroner would pay 20,578 kroner in income taxes, leaving them with 48,222 kroner (€4,040) a month in take-home pay.

In Denmark, a person born in 1990 with no children who does not own a house would pay about 17,431 kroner in tax, leaving them with 26,497 kroner, or €3,550 a month in take-home pay. Sweden has seen the krona decline significantly in value over recent years.

In 2023, the average salary for software and applications developers and analysts in Norway was 72,320 kroner (€6,059), while in Denmark, the average salary was 47,748 kroner (€6,399).

In conclusion, software developers in Germany likely have the highest take-home pay in absolute Euros, followed by Norway, Sweden, and Denmark when adjusting for taxes and social contributions. However, high taxes in Nordic countries fund extensive public services, which affect the net benefit differently than in Germany.

  1. Beyond their salaries, factors such as membership in comprehensive healthcare systems, education benefits, and job security are significant advantages of working as a software developer in the Nordic countries.
  2. Considering the varying tax rates, a software developer in Denmark might redirect a portion of their gross salary towards education or finance, as it's estimated to have around €30,000 - €33,000 in net pay annually.
  3. Technology continues to advance rapidly, and as such, a software developer in Norway could explore new opportunities with the latest technologies, along with acquiring job benefits and jobs in the tech industry, despite slightly lower average wages compared to Germany.
