The Kiel Canal, a crucial lifeline for the maritime economy in Germany and Europe, is currently grappling with several issues. The International Kiel Canal Committee (IKC) and the Nautical Association of Kiel (NVzK) have called for immediate action to address these concerns.

The problems in operation and maintenance of the Kiel Canal are escalating, with incidents unprecedented in its history occurring regularly. The IKC and NVzK have urged the federal government to assign specialized personnel, such as nautical professionals, technicians, and engineers, to the Waterways and Shipping Office (WSV) NOK.

The deterioration in the safe and predictable passage for international shipping has led to a noticeable decrease in ship sizes and passage numbers since July 1, 2023. This decline is further exacerbated by staff shortages at the WSV, causing regular delays in the locking process.

The IKC and NVzK have emphasized the need for urgent renovation of the Kiel Lighthouse, which sustained significant damage after the Baltic storm flood in October 2023. The pilot transfer station there had to be abandoned as a result.

To cope with the longer passage duration, there has been a 20% increase in the demand for pilots and canal pilots. However, this cannot be immediately covered due to the long training time. The IKC and NVzK have requested the permanent stop of blanket position cuts at the WSV and have urged the creation of attractive working conditions to address this issue.

The Kiel-Canal Initiative e.V., an organization that unites committed voices for the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, advocates for its functional preservation and future viability. The Initiative includes numerous companies, several chambers of commerce, public law corporations, institutions, associations, clubs, and regional authorities as members.

The higher costs for users of the Kiel Canal due to longer and more complex approach routes further reduce its attractiveness. Delays in lock operation in the Kiel Canal have negative effects not only locally but also internationally.

While geopolitical tensions and shifts in global maritime routes are primarily responsible for the significant decrease in ship traffic through the Kiel Canal, the canal's strategic importance remains vital. The IKC and NVzK have urged swift and consistent completion of planning and ongoing expansion and renovation measures to ensure the Kiel Canal's continued relevance in the maritime economy.

The industry and finance sectors are increasingly concerned about the ongoing issues in the operation and maintenance of the Kiel Canal, which is a vital lifeline for maritime economy in Germany and Europe. To address these concerns, the International Kiel Canal Committee (IKC) and the Nautical Association of Kiel (NVzK) have appealed to the federal government for the allocation of specialized personnel to the Waterways and Shipping Office (WSV) NOK.

The deterioration in safe and predictable passage for international shipping through the Kiel Canal has led to a reduction in ship sizes and passage numbers since July 1, 2023. This decline is further compounded by staff shortages at the WSV, causing regular delays in lock operations, ultimately impacting both local and international finance.
