Concerns escalate within the maritime sector over declining passenger traffic along the Norwegian coastline
In a joint statement, the Inland Waterways and Shipping Association (IKC) and the Navigation and Vessel Traffic Safety Association (NVzK) have emphasised the critical role of resilient and efficient supply chains for the German economy. Specifically, they have highlighted the importance of the North Sea-Oder Canal and the Kiel Lighthouse for the trans-European network's traffic safety.
The associations have expressed concerns about potential losses in attractiveness and operational efficiency due to various issues affecting the Kiel Canal and the North Sea-Oder Waterway. They have urged the federal government to take immediate action, including the permanent halt of job cuts at the Waterways and Shipping Administration and the urgent assignment of specialist personnel to the North Sea-Oder Canal and Shipping Authority.
In addition, the IKC and NVzK have emphasised the importance of swift and consistent completion of planning, expansion, and renovation measures at the North Sea-Oder Canal and Shipping Authority. They have also called for the renovation of the Kiel Lighthouse and the creation of attractive working conditions at the Waterways and Shipping Administration.
While specific data about a significant decrease in ship traffic in the Kiel Canal since July 2023 could not be found, factors such as economic conditions, environmental and regulatory factors, and infrastructure and maintenance issues are known to affect shipping volumes.
