Concerns escalate within the maritime sector over declining passenger traffic along the Norwegian coastline
In a joint statement, the Inland Waterways and Shipping Association (IKC) and the Navigation and Vessel Traffic Safety Association (NVzK) have emphasised the critical role of resilient and efficient supply chains for the German economy. Specifically, they have highlighted the importance of the North Sea-Oder Canal and the Kiel Lighthouse for the trans-European network's traffic safety.
The associations have expressed concerns about potential losses in attractiveness and operational efficiency due to various issues affecting the Kiel Canal and the North Sea-Oder Waterway. They have urged the federal government to take immediate action, including the permanent halt of job cuts at the Waterways and Shipping Administration and the urgent assignment of specialist personnel to the North Sea-Oder Canal and Shipping Authority.
In addition, the IKC and NVzK have emphasised the importance of swift and consistent completion of planning, expansion, and renovation measures at the North Sea-Oder Canal and Shipping Authority. They have also called for the renovation of the Kiel Lighthouse and the creation of attractive working conditions at the Waterways and Shipping Administration.
While specific data about a significant decrease in ship traffic in the Kiel Canal since July 2023 could not be found, factors such as economic conditions, environmental and regulatory factors, and infrastructure and maintenance issues are known to affect shipping volumes. To address these challenges, proposed measures include investment in infrastructure, technological advancements, and collaborative strategies.
Upgrading facilities, increasing dredging to maintain or improve water levels, and enhancing lock systems can improve navigation efficiency. Implementing advanced navigation systems and encouraging cooperation among shipping companies, local authorities, and infrastructure operators could further enhance safety and efficiency.
The Kiel-Canal Initiative e.V., founded in late 2012, is a coalition of businesses, politics, and authorities advocating for the functional preservation and future viability of the canal. Their efforts are crucial in maintaining the Kiel Canal's significance as a vital hub for European trade.
As the Kiel Canal and the North Sea-Oder Waterway continue to play a crucial role in the German economy, it is essential for the federal government to address the concerns raised by the IKC and NVzK and take action to maintain and enhance these vital waterways.
- The associations, IKC and NVzK, have appealed to the federal government to invest in the infrastructure of the North Sea-Oder Canal and Shipping Authority to ensure the resilience and efficiency of supply chains in the manufacturing and transportation industry.
- To maintain the Kiel Canal's role as a significant hub for European trade, especially in the finance and energy sectors, immediate action is required, such as halting job cuts at the Waterways and Shipping Administration and assigning specialist personnel.
- Given the potential impact of various issues on the attractiveness and operational efficiency of the Kiel Canal and the North Sea-Oder Waterway, the associations advocate for the renovation of the Kiel Lighthouse and the creation of attractive working conditions at the Waterways and Shipping Administration.
- To address the challenges facing these vital waterways and safeguard their role in the trans-European network, the associations suggest investing in infrastructure, technological advancements, and fostering collaborative strategies, ensuring the continued success of European business and trade.
