Construction at Schloßstraße Subway Station Remains Ongoing

The much-anticipated second construction phase of the Schloßstraße U-Bahn station renovation in Berlin is expected to commence in April 2026. This phase will primarily focus on platform 3/4, including the elevator shaft and the new pedestrian underpass, with the project set to be completed by summer 2027 [1].

The renovation, which began in 2016, has faced several challenges, including unexpectedly extensive renovation needs, such as foundation renewal and corroded support repairs, as well as slower piling work for the underpass due to challenging geology [1]. These issues have led to delays, but the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) has assured that the Senate does not currently expect any further delays or cost increases for the second construction phase, as the location for the new elevator has been agreed upon [1].

The Schloßstraße U-Bahn station, situated on the most important shopping street in southwestern Berlin, has been operating as a provisional structure with bare or graffiti-covered concrete walls and exposed pipes. The commissioning of the elevator at the station is still scheduled for the 2030s [1].

Notably, the station's renovation was temporarily halted due to it being placed under heritage protection by the State Heritage Office. However, the BVG has stated that all previously unresolved issues have been coordinated with the responsible heritage protection authorities, and the corresponding conditions have been integrated into the planning [1].

As the renovation progresses, all train traffic will be routed via the modernized platform 1/2, which will already be accessible through the new pedestrian underpass. The three new elevators—including the one at Schloßstraße—are anticipated to be operational in summer 2027 [1].

The application for the second construction phase is currently in the approval process within the three-month period, as stipulated by the Faster-Building Act. The State Heritage Office has received another application from the BVG for approval in early May [1]. The approval for the second construction phase is still pending, including that of the Technical Supervisory Authority.

The delays in the renovation process, particularly those related to the elevator issue, have been acknowledged by Transport State Secretary Arne Herz [1]. Despite these challenges, the second construction phase of the Schloßstraße U-Bahn station renovation is moving forward, promising a significant improvement in the station's infrastructure and accessibility for passengers.
