Construction on A7 near Hamburg nearing completion, with three lanes now clear for travel
Expansion and Renovation of the Autobahn A7 in Germany
The Autobahn A7, a vital artery connecting Hamburg and Hannover, is currently undergoing significant changes. As of August 1st, three lanes are available in both directions towards Hamburg and Hannover, marking the completion of an expansion that began in 1991. However, motorists are advised to drive with caution as certain sections of the Autobahn are undergoing renovation and repair work.
Between Egestorf and Schaapskaben-Ost rest area, the flowing traffic will be reduced from three to two lanes from August 1st. This reduction is necessary to allow for road markings and bank work, which will take place from August 18 to 22. Emergency stopping bays in this section will also be dismantled during this period.
Cracking has been observed on the opposite carriageway (direction Hamburg), so the speed limit between Evendorf and Garlstorf has been temporarily reduced to 80 km/h. Motorists are asked to adhere to this speed limit for safety reasons.
The Garlstorf interchange is now accessible in both directions, and the Schaapskaben Ost rest area is open, providing a leisure break for holidaymakers on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath. However, the Garlstorfer Wald West rest area (direction Hannover) remains closed for renovation.
Seven bridge structures further along the A7 towards the south are not yet completed, and urgent repair work is necessary for traffic safety. The bridge repair work on the A7 between Egestorf and Bispingen will be carried out in several phases. During these repairs, traffic on both carriageways will be routed two-lane under the bridges.
The construction site is located between Garlstorf and Egestorf on the Autobahn A7. The renovation of the 5.6-kilometer section started in the 1990s and is expected to be fully completed by the end of September 2025. The remaining construction work is focused on completing lane expansions and safety improvements as part of the overall upgrade project.
Key details until the end of September 2025:
- Work scope: Finalization of road surface layers, installation of safety barriers, signage, and noise protection measures.
- Traffic disruptions: Reduced lanes (often one lane instead of two in each direction) with temporary speed limits enforced.
- Scheduling: Nighttime and weekend work to minimize peak hour impact, but occasional daytime lane closures possible.
- Traffic management: Variable message signs and reduced speed limits to ensure safety; use of diversion routes mainly for heavy vehicles during major works.
- Expected completion: By the end of September 2025, the construction on this section is planned to be fully complete with normal traffic conditions restored.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information, local traffic authorities and the Autobahn construction project website provide daily updates and specific closure timings. Motorists are encouraged to check these sources for the latest information before their journey.
- The upcoming renewal of the road surface layers, safety barriers, signage, and noise protection measures on the Autobahn A7 is part of the industry's ongoing investment in transportation and automotive infrastructure.
- The finance sector plays a crucial role in funding these extensive renovation projects, ensuring the smooth flow of commerce and travel along the Autobahn A7, particularly as it connects major cities such as Hamburg and Hannover.
