Construction progress on the Mekong River scenic road stands at 16% completion
The Naga Withi Mekong riverside road project, a 43.5-kilometer scenic road under construction along the Mekong River in Northeast Thailand, is set to revolutionise tourism, cross-border trade, and local economies upon its completion in 2027. This ambitious project connects the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge to Phra That Phanom in Mukdahan and Nakhon Phanom provinces, offering a picturesque transport route that showcases key cultural and natural landmarks such as Manopirom Beach, Wat Song Khon, and Kaeng Kabao islet.
The project is designed with a focus on boosting tourism by providing a visually appealing route along the Mekong River, incorporating cultural tourism elements like naga symbolism, local traditions, and folklore to enhance visitor experience. The naga, a mythical serpent symbolising abundance in the region, is prominently featured in the project's tourism signs.
To enhance cross-border trade, the project improves connectivity between Thailand and Laos via the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, facilitating smoother and increased trade flows. The project also aims to strengthen local economies by upgrading road infrastructure, expanding bridges, building rest stops, and creating jobs for local residents during and after construction.
The project budget is approximately 615 million baht, and scenic rest stops and tourism signage with traditional imagery are integral to promoting local culture and identity. The upgraded routes for the Naga Withi project will have shoulder widths of 0-2m, will be reinforced with steel, and will feature proper drainage systems in community areas.
The Naga Withi project extends from the Mukdahan governor's residence to the Phra That Phanom area, covering a distance of 43.4km. Eleven bridges are being expanded as part of the project. Once completed, the Naga Withi project is expected to boost tourism and cross-border trade, while strengthening local economies and rural road networks.
In essence, the Naga Withi road aims to integrate infrastructure development with cultural and economic benefits, positioning the Mekong riverside corridor as a key driver of regional tourism growth, trade enhancement, and socioeconomic upliftment for the local population.
- The project's focus on scenic beauty, coupled with the incorporation of abundant naga symbolism, is set to attract finance from investors who see potential in the tourism sector along the Mekong River.
- With improved connectivity between Thailand and Laos in transportation via the expanded bridges, the project is anticipated to stimulate the finance sector with increased cross-border trade activities.
