Nissan Pursues Partnership with Foxconn for EV Production
After the termination of merger talks between Nissan and Honda, Nissan is actively seeking a potential partnership with Foxconn focused on electric vehicle (EV) production at its Oppama plant. The negotiations have been ongoing in 2022 to repurpose the Oppama facility for EV manufacturing, which could help Nissan avoid closing the plant and preserve thousands of jobs there.
This collaboration aims to combine Nissan's automotive expertise with Foxconn's technology manufacturing capabilities to boost Nissan’s EV production capacity and support its broader restructuring efforts. Foxconn, despite selling an EV factory in the U.S., remains committed to EV production and is reported to be exploring manufacturing opportunities for Japanese automakers including Nissan.
Nissan's focus on new partnerships like the one with Foxconn comes after earlier discussions with Honda about a merger have been called off or are on hold. The terminated discussions were part of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) formed in December, which allowed Honda and Nissan to explore the possibility of a business integration.
Meanwhile, Foxconn offers in-car data and payment technology for parking, EV charging, fuelling, and tolling, with clients including major automakers like Audi, BMW, and Volkswagen. Nissan's potential partnership with Foxconn could bring these advanced technologies to its EV production, further enhancing its offering in the competitive EV market.
In addition to its partnership with Foxconn, Nissan has also revealed the names and body styles of three E-Tech electric light-commercial vehicles: the compact Estafette, the Goelette, and the Trafic. Nissan and Honda will continue to collaborate on electrified vehicles, as per an agreement made prior to the merger discussions.
Elsewhere in the automotive industry, European automotive industry body ACEA focused on the future of the sector's workforce in its latest strategic dialogue meeting. ACEA called for ways to support the people who build and develop vehicles, including the creation of an automotive-mobility ecosystem academy and reforming EU state aid rules and funding programs.
