Costa Rica Aims for Competitive EV Market in 5 Years
Costa Rica, renowned for its environmental awareness, is poised to revolutionize its transportation sector in the coming years. With a surge in vehicle ownership and a substantial portion of emissions stemming from energy use, legislators are advocating for greener alternatives. The country aspires to cultivate a competitive electric vehicle (EV) market within five years.
Currently, Costa Rica is witnessing a boom in car ownership, with twice as many vehicles registered annually as children born. This, coupled with an antiquated public transport system, is contributing to increased emissions. The transport sector accounts for over two-thirds of the country's climate-changing emissions. However, Costa Rica's compact size and low-carbon electric power grid make it an ideal candidate for electric cars.
Legislator Marcela Guerrero has proposed fiscal incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. This, coupled with modernizing public transport with improved routes and more electric buses and trains, could significantly lower emissions. The country has already demonstrated its commitment to renewable energy, setting the world record for most consecutive days running on renewable energy in 2021.
Costa Rica's ambitious plans for its transportation sector could result in a significant reduction in emissions in the coming years. With the right incentives and modernization, the country aims to have a competitive electric vehicle market within five years, further solidifying its status as a pioneer in environmental conservation.
