Could Toyota have unveiled a revamped Celica model?
Toyota Hints at Possible Return of Celica or MR2
Rumours about the revival of the iconic Celica and MR2 nameplates by Toyota have been circulating since the launch of the GR Supra in 2019, and the latest developments suggest that the Celica may be making a comeback.
In an interview with Best Car magazine earlier this year, Toyota Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakajima hinted at the possibility of a new Celica. According to the publication, Nakajima revealed that the two cars (Celica and MR2) were one in the same, with the possibility of it wearing either name.
More recently, Nakajima further fuelled the speculation when he hinted at the possibility of the revived car wearing the Celica or MR2 name in an interview with the same magazine.
While no concrete information about a new Celica (or MR2) has been revealed yet, Best Car is reporting that the GR Celica may be unveiled at the 2027 Tokyo Motor Show. This rumour, however, should be taken with a grain of salt, as the reveal of the GR Celica at the motor show is still a rumour at this point.
The Japanese publication has also claimed to have confirmed that the GR Yaris M Concept revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January is actually a GR Celica in disguise. This suggests that the GR Celica will feature a similar design to the GR Yaris M Concept.
If the GR Celica does make its debut at the 2027 Tokyo Motor Show, it is expected to produce approximately 300kW of power, thanks to Toyota's next-generation four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. The car will reportedly feature a carbon fibre roof and bonnet, further emphasising its sporty and performance-oriented nature.
It is worth noting that there is strong demand within Toyota for the Celica, according to Best Car's interview with Hiroki Nakajima. This suggests that the car manufacturer is seriously considering the revival of the Celica nameplate.
However, no specific timeline for the release of the new Celica has been provided by Toyota or Best Car. Fans of the Celica will have to wait and see if the rumours of its revival become a reality.
In the meantime, the GR Celica will reportedly compete at the fifth round of the Super Taikyu race series on the 26th of this month. The car that will compete in the race will essentially be a GR Celica wearing a GR Yaris body.
As the rumours of the Celica's revival continue to swirl, fans of the iconic sports car will be eagerly awaiting any further updates from Toyota. Only time will tell if the Celica will make a triumphant return to the automotive world.
