What's the Deal with Motorway Traffic in Germany? Overcrowded Truck Parking Spaces Causing a Stir
Criticism Mounts over Excessive Truck Parking Congestion on Motorways - Critics voice concerns over congested parking areas along highways
It's a tale of the road less taken in Germany, where finding a parking spot for those big rigs on the highway (motorways) is becoming a trialsome task. According to Auto Club Europa's (ACE) recent audit, the situation is particularly precarious on motorways in Eastern Germany due to the sheer number of trucks cruising past after 8:30 PM (still plenty of daylight hours left, folks!).
In the wee hours of the night, when visibility is limited, you'll find trucks parked in entrance and exit lanes - yikes! Unsafe situations have been reported on major routes like the southern Berlin Ring (A10) and the A24 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The scene isn't much prettier in Saxony, where the rest areas like Oberlausitz Nord on the A4 near Bautzen and Noethnitzgrund South and North on the A17 near Dresden have occupancy rates of 165 percent and 120 percent respectively, with more trucks than available spaces.
"The race for parking spots kicks off at around 4 PM," says Dirk Engelhardt, a board spokesman for the Federal Association of Goods Transport, Logistics and Disposal (BGL). The German government assures it's working on the issue, claiming that the number of parking spaces has been steadily increasing since 2018.
ACE's snapshots show massive overcrowding at 31 observed rest areas in Eastern Germany. A grand total of 2,168 parked trucks were counted, leaving 1,412 parking spaces available, resulting in a whopping 50% overcrowding.
On 21 of the 31 inspected rest areas, concrete traffic hazards were found, especially during night hours with limited visibility. Rest assured (pun intended), no trucks were spotted parking on the hard shoulder of the motorway on any rest area.
The Association demands that the parking shortage should be a top priority for the Ministry of Transport. According to a survey by the Federal Highway Research Institute in 2023, there is a shortage of more than 19,500 regular truck parking spaces on motorways nationwide. BGL estimates that the actual shortage could even be around 40,000 parking spaces.
The Federal Ministry of Transport claims that approximately 3,000 parking spaces have been added since 2018, and telematic parking procedures are underway to optimize the use of parking areas.

The community and employment policies should address the shortage of over 19,500 regular truck parking spaces on German motorways, as highlighted by the Federal Highway Research Institute in 2023. The employment policy, in particular, should focus on creating more jobs in the transportation and automotive industry to accommodate the increasing demand for truck drivers.
The industry, finance, and transportation sectors should collaborate to leverage telematic parking procedures and optimize the use of rest areas to ensure safety on Germany's motorways. This partnership could also help alleviate the challenges posed by the overcrowding of rest areas, as reported by Auto Club Europa (ACE).
