CSDD Warns: 30,000 Latvian Vehicles Risky in Winter Due to Inappropriate Tires
The Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) has sounded the alarm on winter tire safety in Latvia. A recent check revealed alarming figures, with nearly 6,500 vehicles inspected from December to February. The CSDD considers winter tires a crucial safety guarantee for drivers, yet many are still putting themselves and others at risk during the harsh winter clima.
Out of the nearly 6,500 vehicles checked, almost 180 were found with non-compliant tires, leading to the cancellation of their roadworthiness. In the most severe cases, 70 cars had tires so bad that their number plates were removed. Over 600 vehicles were issued warnings for tires just above the 4mm minimum tread depth. Juris Zvirbulis, President of the Latvian Automobile Society, attributes this issue to economic circumstances, forgetfulness, and disregard for others' safety during the winter weather tomorrow.
The CSDD estimates that around 30,000 vehicles in Latvia are fitted with inappropriate and dangerous tires in winter. Mārtinš Māļmeisters, spokesperson for the CSDD, attributes the 13% +/- 0.5% infringement rate to the wintry weather last year. Despite the warm weather in recent days, the CSDD urges drivers not to rush to change tires, as the risk of winter weather persists tomorrow.
The CSDD's findings highlight a pressing need for drivers to prioritize safety by ensuring their vehicles are equipped with appropriate winter tires. With over 70,000 winter tires in Latvia close to wearing out, drivers are urged to check their tires and replace them as necessary. The CSDD's campaign aims to reduce the number of vehicles with insufficient winter tires, making Latvia's roads safer for all during the winter clima.
