Cuban Catholic Church official Angel Rivera was appointed and ordained as the new Bishop of Cuba.

The Diocese of Cuba has a new leader, as Angel Rivera was ordained and consecrated as its bishop on September 18, 2025. The service marked another milestone in strengthening the Anglican presence in Cuba, a journey that began in 1871.

Prior to his ordination, Rivera served as a priest in Puerto Rico. His election as bishop of the Diocese of Cuba makes him the first bishop of Cuba in more than four decades to be chosen by election rather than by appointment.

The service was chiefly consecrated by Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe. Rivera, expressing his feelings, said he felt honoured to serve the Episcopalians in Cuba, describing the Diocese as 'very special.'

The Diocese of Cuba was previously a missionary district of The Episcopal Church, a connection that was formalised in 1901. The church in Cuba remained connected to the wider Anglican Communion for much of the time they were separated, through a church body known as the Metropolitan Council of Cuba. However, the two churches separated in the 1960s due to Fidel Castro seizing power and the disintegration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.

The Diocese of Cuba reunified with The Episcopal Church in 2020. Now, as part of Province II, which also includes the Diocese of Puerto Rico, the Diocese of Cuba boasts 47 churches and more than 30 missions, with approximately 2,000 Episcopalians as of 2025.

The service took place during the House of Bishops meeting, which concluded on September 15, 2025, in the Diocese of the Dominican Republic. Rivera succeeds Bishop Rafael Morales Maldonado, who had been serving as bishop provisional since 2023. The service is expected to further strengthen the Anglican presence in Cuba, a journey that continues to unfold.
