Customs Raid Finds 96 Cases of Illegal Work in Hotel Industry
On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Financial Control of Illegal Work of the Customs (FKS) conducted nationwide inspections in the hotel and catering industry. The Main Customs Office Bielefeld, led by Arnd Hilwig, participated with 63 officers. They found irregularities in 96 cases, including minimum wage violations and illegal employment.
The inspections, aimed at ensuring compliance with the legal minimum wage and social security obligations, uncovered 79 cases of minimum wage violations. The current general minimum wage is 12.82 euros per hour. Additionally, seven cases of suspected withholding of social security contributions and three cases of illegal employment of foreigners were discovered.
During the inspections, 250 employees were questioned about their employment conditions. The FKS initiated twelve administrative offense proceedings and four criminal proceedings on-site. Follow-up inspections were conducted to verify the data collected with the companies' wage and financial accounting and business records.
The customs authorities' efforts contribute to securing social systems and state revenues. By combating illegal work, they ensure fair employment and competitive conditions in the hotel and catering industry, which is subject to the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG).
