Customs Seize 50,000 Cigarettes in Hidden Compartment on A3 Motorway
Customs officers in Bavaria have seized over 50,000 cigarettes following a discovery by the Zwiesel traffic control unit of a hidden compartment in a Romanian truck on the A3 motorway. The incident, which occurred in the districts of Passau and Deggendorf, has led to an investigation into suspected tax evasion.
The discovery revealed a concealed space behind a partition wall and wooden panels, containing Romanian-tax-stamped cigarettes. Both the driver and four passengers initially claimed ignorance of the contraband.
The cigarettes, totalling 50,500, were confiscated. The driver and two passengers initially declared they had cigarettes within the personal allowance limit. However, further investigation is underway to determine who is responsible for hiding the cigarettes and the details of this specific incident.
The tax loss from this seizure amounts to 9,500 euros. The driver has stated that the vehicle was registered in his brother's name, and he works as a driver for his brother's company on the route from Romania to England and back. The investigation into suspected tax evasion is ongoing.
