Customs Seize €150k in Luxury Goods, Tobacco in Germany
Customs officers in Germany have made a significant seizure of untaxed luxury goods and tobacco, valued at over 150,000 euros, during a routine vehicle check in the Aschaffenburg area on May 3rd.
The haul included further gold jewelry, worth over 100,000 euros, and nearly 160 designer sunglasses, valued at over 50,000 euros, discovered during a subsequent inspection. The seized items also comprised luxury brands' sunglasses and untaxed tobacco, with a total value of over 150,000 euros.
The vehicle, a BMW X5 with a German license plate, was stopped by customs officers from Schweinfurt, working together with traffic police from Aschaffenburg. The driver, a 30-year-old Romanian national, admitted to not paying customs duties for the goods upon entry into the European Union. The tax evasion value of the seized goods amounts to around 34,000 euros. A criminal investigation, including suspected money laundering, has been initiated against the driver.
The Main Customs Office Schweinfurt, in coordination with the public prosecutor's office Aschaffenburg, is handling the subsequent investigations. The seizure of these high-value, untaxed luxury items and smuggled tobacco highlights the ongoing efforts of German customs to prevent such activities and protect the country's tax revenue.
