Looking back, it's a far cry from the days when Russia was considered a crucial player in Germany's foreign trade. However, the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions have sent Russia plummeting down the ranks of Germany's key trade partners.
According to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, German imports from Russia tanked by a whopping 94.6% in 2024, shrinking from €33.1 billion in 2021 to just €1.8 billion. It's a sad drop from the 12th spot to the 59th position, making Russia a negligible contributor to Germany's total imports, accounting for barely 0.1%.
The decline in exports was equally disheartening. Germany shipped goods worth €7.6 billion to Russia in 2024, a steep drop of 71.6% compared to 2021, and a disappointing descent from the 15th spot to the 36th position in the export rankings. Russia now accounts for just 0.5% of Germany's total exports.
The EU's 17th sanctions package against Russia, implemented in May, further tightened the noose. The package included measures restricting the Russian shadow fleet's transportation of oil and oil products, as well as export bans for goods with industrial or military applications and restrictions on Russia's access to capital and financial markets.
Initially, Russia was still a vital energy supplier for Germany. However, by 2024, Russia's offerings primarily consisted of metals, chemical products, and food and feed for Germany. In return, Germany primarily exported pharmaceutical and chemical products, as well as machinery to Russia.
The EU as a whole also significantly curtailed its trade with Russia. Imports dropped from around €163.6 billion in 2021 to €36 billion in 2024, a stunning decline of 76.3%. Exports from the EU to Russia decreased by 64.6% within three years, reaching around €31.6 billion in 2024.
